We’ve been getting some questions and comments lately from some of our (very astute) guests regarding the pricing changes that have shown up on our menu recently. We wanted to take a minute to fill you all in on what’s going on, the reason for the shift, and what we’re doing to make sure you all see minimal changes when you come in.
Last November, Measure FF was passed, and the minimum wage in Oakland was set to increase 36%, to $12.25. We were really excited to see this change, as it makes life easier for our hardworking staff—and, in reality, many of you—but we did think a lot about how we could reasonably keep our business running (while continuing to provide you all with delicious mac and cheese) taking into account these changes.
As many of you noticed, we increased our prices by 10% the same week the new measure went into effect: this translates to a $4 price difference on the average meal (two macs, a side, and a dessert). We’re so grateful to all of you, who have taken this news with little more than a shrug and a question mark, and who are so supportive of our business week after week.
In order to keep costs down going forward, two of our macs have gone into retirement: the Crab mac and our Ivy Leaguer Truffle mac. We found that with the pricing changes, these two macs ended up a little more on the pricey side than we like to be; we try to give you a big meal without a big price tag. The good news is, we’ll be bringing back the Crab mac every January and February at the peak of Dungeness crab season to celebrate this delicious, locally-harvested tradition (keep an eye on this blog and our social media for specifics!).
Also, to keep our basic mac offerings at an even 12, two new flavors have been permanently added to the menu! Check out our previous post for more details about that, too. Please let us know—either in the comments below or by email–if any of you have additional questions on these, or any, changes.
See you all soon!
